Hay muhas dudas respecto del origen y primitivo solar de este antiguo linaje. La opinión de autorizados tratadistas asegura que procede de Galicia, de donde pasó a las Vascongadas, y le señalan como tronco y fundador al Conde don Mendo, hermano del último Rey de los longobardos, llamado Desiderio. Es también opinión muy extendida que en un principio se denominó Mendayo (derivación, tal vez, de Mendo), transformándose en Avedaño al radicar en las Vascongadas. Del lugar donde estuvo su primitiva casa, no se guarda memoria. Las noticias más antiguas hablan solamente del solar que tuvo en San Martín de A. (al que dió su nombre), lugar próximo a Vitoria, ha mucho tiempo despoblado. Don Diego de Salvatierra asegura en su obra "Gobierno y República de Vitoria", en 1585, que dicho pueblo formaba un barrio o arrabal de Vitoria, del que ya, en el citado año, no existía más que la iglesia de San Martín, convertida en ermita. De este solar pasaron los caballeros A. a Vizcaya y Guipúzcoa. En Vizcaya pobló uno de ellos en el Valle de Arratia, y fundó el solar de Urquizu, en el hoy partido judicial de Durango. Ese caballero parece que fué, según cuentan las historia, Pedro Ortiz de A., que pasó de Álava al citado Valle de Arratia a reprimir y contener la bravura de los Zumelzu, en 1290, llamado por los émulos y competidores de dicha casa. Realmente reprimió la audacia de ésta, venciendo a los Zumelzu en varias ocasiones. ...
