El origen de este linaje se remonta a tiempos del Rey don Sancho de Navarra. Lope Iñiguez, Ricohombre del citado Monarca y Señor de Llodio, Mendoza y A., casó con doña Teresa Ximénez (hija de Ximeno Iñiguez, Señor de Cameros, y de doña María Gonzáles de Lara). De esa unión nacieron tres hijos: Iñigo López, Señor de Llodio; Gonzalo López, Señor de Mendoza, y Lope López, Señor de Álava y fundador de la casa de este apellido. Radicó la casa solar de Alaba en el lugar de Gamarrra Mayor, del Ayuntamiento y partido judicial de Vitoria, y era una casa torre de piedra con sus saeteras, separa da de las demás "como un tiro de piedra", según frase de los vecinos del lugar. De una línea, cuya sucesión directa se remonta hasta el siglo XV, procedieron: Diego de A. Tenorio y Andrés Arista de A. Tenorio, los cuales trasladaron su residencia a la villa de Laguna de Cameros (Rioja), donde tuvieron que probar su nobleza, obteniendo sentencia confirmatoria de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, el 15 de Octubre de 1549. De la misma línea fué Pedro de Álava y Mora, que litigó su nobleza con los lugares de Antezana de la Rivera, Manzanos y Leciñana, ganando también ejecutoria de hidalguía en la misma Chancillería, el 8 de Mayo de 1570. Los sucesores de Pedro Martínez de A., Continuo de los Reyes Católicos y fundador en 1555 del mayorazgo con la casa de la calle de la Zapatería, en Vitoria, entroncaron con otras nobles casas. ...
