Los de este apellido son oriundos de Portugal, pues proceden de unos caballeros ilustres lusitanos que pasaron a España. El Rey Don Alonso IV de Portugal tuvo de su mujer Doña Beatriz por su hijo primogénito al Infante Don Pedro, que a su muerte le sucedió en la Corona, llamándose Don Pedro I el Justiciero. Cuando este Infante contaba ocho años tan sólo, se convino su matrimonio con la Infanta Blanca de Castilla, su prima; pero esta boda no llegó a realizarse a causa del mal estado de salud de la novia. Años después se concertó su unión con Constanza, hija del Infante Juan Manuel, nieto de Fernando III el Santo, Rey de Castilla y Regente del reino durante la minoridad de Alfonso XI; pero este Juan Manuel no dejó marchar a Portugal a su hija, por cuya causa estalló la guerra entre ambos países. Hecha la paz, se celebró el matrimonio en 1334. En la comitiva de la nueva Reina Doña Constanza figuraba la célebre Doña Inés de Castro, llamada Cuello de Garza, hija de Don Pedro Fernández de Castro, gran Señor de Galicia y nieto del Rey Don Sancho IV de Castilla, de la que no tardó en enamorarse locamente el Infante Don Pedro, marido de Doña Constanza. Esto hizo que el matrimonio fuese desgraciado desde el principio, si bien se asegura que Don Pedro I trataba a su esposa con el mayor afecto; tanto, que esta llegó a creer que se trataba de unos amoríos pasajeros.
