Antiguo y noble linaje originario de Corella, en Navarra, donde se escribe Argáiz, que significa en lengua éuscara peña inaccesible o de difícil acceso. Una de sus ramas se trasladó de Corella a la villa de Arnedo, de la provincia de Logroño, y fundó allí casa muy principal. Algunos de sus descendientes castellanizaron el primitivo apellido llamándose A., mientras otros siguieron apellidándose Argáiz. Esto demuestra que A. y Argáiz son el mismo linaje y representan la misma familia. En 1540 era vecino de Arnedo D. Martín de A., que probó su hidalguía en el citado año ante la Real Chancillería de Valladolid. En 1620 hizo igual probanza en la misma Chancillería D. Antonio de A., originario de Arnedo y vecino de Logroño. Por el año de 1550 era jefe de una línea de la casa de Arnedo y vecino de dicha villa Pedro de A., natural de Arnedo, que contrajo matrimonio con su prima doña María de A., de la misma naturaleza (hija de Juan de A., jefe de otra línea de la misma casa de Arnedo, y de doña María Bretón, ambos naturales de Arnedo), naciendo de ese enlace José de A. Bretón, que sigue, y Justo de A. Bretón, natural de Arnedo y caballero de la Orden de Santiago, en la que ingresó el 9 de Diciembre de 1665. El primero, José de A. y Bretón, nació también en Arnedo. En la villa de Bergasa, del partido judicial de Arnedo, hubo otra casa de este linaje, dimanada de la de Arnedo, de la que fué Juan de A. Ramírez, natural de Bergasa, que casó con su prima doña María de A. Hernández. ...
