Este apellido, de origen navarro, se asienta en Canarias a raíz de la Conquista, en el año 1500, cuando se establece Juan Bautista de A. en la isla de Tenerife. Juan Bautista pertenecía por línea directa a la Casa fundada por Martín Ochoa de Gaztelu, Escudero, Señor del antiguo Palacio de A. (Ascaín) y sus términos en el valle de Labourd de Gascuña, y Doña María García de Narbart, Señora de los históricos Palacios de Agorreta. Florecieron en la segunda mitad del siglo XIV. Les sucede su hijo primogénito Juan Martínez de Agorreta A., como Señor de los Palacios de A. y Agorreta, que estuvo casado con Doña Leonor Tocco, descendiente legítima de la nobilísima familia Acciaivoli de Florencia. Juan Bautista de A., había servido con gran valor a los Señore Reyes Católicos en la conquista de Baza, a las órdenes del famoso Marqués de Cádiz. Regidor perpetuo de la ciudad de Cádiz, fue luego Alguacil Mayor de Tenerife en 1501 y Diputado y Mensajero de la Isla a la Corte. Estuvo casado con Doña Catalina Bernal de Estupiñán Méndez de Sotomayor, de la primera Nobleza de Jerez de la Frontera, de cuyo enlace tuvo cinco hijos. El primero de ellos, Antón Bernal de A., que le sucede en el nombre. Formaron los A. en Canarias, una Casa de gran lustre y distinción, contrayendo las más brillantes alianzas con los Guerra, los Lercaro-Justiniani, patricios del Libro de Oro de Génova. ...
