In un'antichissima fonte sull'origine di questa famiglia,si legge: "Vennero de Toscana, grandissimi homeni solito de facende, et erano zojelieri, et altre sorte de mercantie, et hano fatto de belli stabeli, sopra la fondamenta della Madonna dell'horto". E difatti nella summenzionata chiesa, vi sono memorie di una famiglia, resa specialmente illustre da un Francesco Balata, segretario del Senato nel 1579.
