Capostipite della famiglia fu un Bartolomeo, detto de' Lavelli, figlio di Antonio, magnano, nativo di Pagnone in Valvassina, nello Stato di Milano ,stabilitosi in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana sui primi del Quattrocento. Dal figlio suo Jacopo Cozza nacque Valdringo Cozza e da questi il Capitano Bernardino, menzionato in un atto dell'anno 1537. Fin da allora prese a denominarsi Valdrighi ed era divenuta tra le ragguardevoli del paese. Da essa sortirono uomini distinti nelle armi e nelle leggi, ma chi la illustrò grandemente fu Bartolomeo Francesco, di Iacopo Filippo, giureconsulto insigne, professore primario nella Classe legale della patria Università, Segretario e Ministro Ducale, che il Duca Francesco II d'Este creò Conte ed investì del feudo di Deusi, titolo e feudo trasmissibile ai discendenti maschi.
