Noble Bertrand seigneur d'Esplay qui transige en 1355, avec Pierre Montagne, chanoine de la cathédrale du Puy, paraît être l'un des premiers membres connus de cette famille, laquelle remonte sa filiation à Johannès, lieutenant-général de Charles de Crussol, bailli du Velay en 1463. Ce Johannès a été la tige de trois branches différentes: 1° Balme du Garay; 2° Balme de Chazeaux, famille qui a produit divers officiers parmi lesquels, un intendant militaire, commandeur de la Légion d'honneur, et dont les armes sont: de gueules, au palmier de sinople planté sur un rocher d'argent, le tout surmonté de trois croissants de même 2 et 1; 3° Balme, bonne bourgeoisie du Puy, anoblie par ordonnance du roi Charles X en date du premier mai 1825, enregistrée le 12 août de la même année, laquelle a donné: un médecin distingué, écrivain spirituel (1742-1805); deux prieurs de Goudet, chanoines de Notre-Dame du Puy, dont l'un: Pierre-Denis assista, en la qualité de prieur et baron de Goudet, à l'assemblèe du 22 mai 1787 des États du Velay, fut porté sur la liste des émigrés de la Haute-Loire et incarcéré au Puy (1795). A cette dernière branche se rattachit aussi: Jean François Benoît Balme qui acquit le premier novembre 1787, de Gabriel du Garay, ses terres de la Ronzade, de la Chaumette et du pont d'Estrolhas. ...
