Antichissima famiglia di Lucca, tra le più importanti e storiche della propria terra, che i geneaologisti cittadini fanno discendere dai signori di Montemagno in Versilia, ai quali appartenne quell'Ingherano, più volte podestà dal 1203 al 1227, e capitano dell'esercito del Comune contro Pisa, Pistoia e la fazione dei Porcaresi. Con Giovanni, la prima volta Anziano nel 1378, il casato entrò nel governo della restaurata Repubblica, coprendo fino al suo termine le dignità più alte.
