Antica ed assai nobile famiglia toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, suo capostipite fu Bonifazio che, tra gli altri figli, ebbe Ildebrando, monaco famosissimo con il nome di papa Gregorio VIII, allorché fu assunto al pontificato (1073-1083).
