Família nobre e antiga que os genealogistas fazem provir de um fidalgo português do século XII ,de nome Rodrigo Annes, natural de Santarém, que se notabilizou em França ao serviço do Rei Filipe Augusto II, que o enviou a defender a cidade de Bourges contra os hereges. Aí se houve de forma tão heróica que ficou conhecido como O Cavaleiro de Bourges, nome que em Portugal, para onde regressou foi aportuguesado como de Borges. A bordadura de flores de lis das suas armas seria uma alusão às do país em que praticou esses feitos. Fixando-se em Trás os Montes fundou solar em Torre de Moncorvo. Seu filho João Rodrigues Borges foi Senhor das Honras de Calvos e Ourilhe,e casou com D.Catarina Lopes, Senhora herdeira da Vila de Álvaro. Deles foram trinetos João Gonçalves Borges, Alcaide-Mor de Santarém, e Senhor de Alva, e outras vilas que D.Afonso V lhe confirmou em 1489; Diogo Gonçalves Borges, pai de Gomes Borges, que instituíu o Morgado de Torre de Moncorvo em 1470; e Ruy Borges, Camareiro-Mor del Rei D.Duarte, Senhor de Carvalhaes e Verdemilho.
