Nobility crown BotetoFamília de ignorada origem, mas que, pelo apelido, pode ser estrangeira. No tempo de D. Manuel I, antes de 1509, já esta família possuía armas, pois se incluíram no Livro do Armeiro-mor. O apelido parece encontrar-se extinto há muito. As armas que lhe competem são: Esquartelado: o primeiro e o quarto de ouro pleno; o segundo e tercerio, de prata, com seis pintas de arminho, de negro, 3, 2, e 1. Timbre: meio mouro barbudo, vestido de oruo, forrado de arminhos, fotado de prata e de vermelho, na mão direita uma pedra de prata em acção de atirar com ela. Alguns heraldistas descrevem estas armas, dizendo que o escudo é esquartelado de Meneses e de Berretos. Talvez assim seja, provindo o apelido B. de alcunha posta nas guerras de África, e que, em alusão a algum feito notável, se concedesse o timbre, o qual, pela figura do mouro, teria lógica explicação. Pode ser que a palavra B. não chegasse a transformar-se em apelido, mas que um B. de Meneses, por ter acrescemtamento de suas armas, passasse a inscrever-se nos livros de armaria só por tal nome, quando mais correctamente se devesse dizer Barretos de Meneses, alcunhados Botetos. Mera hipótese, porém, que pede investigação documental que a transforme em verdade ou a destrua. Pode-se, ainda, admitir, que Boteto seja má transmissão da palavra escrita, correspondente a Barreto. ...
