Antica e nobilissima famiglia patrizia genovese, nota sin dal secolo decimosecondo, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Alcuni autori (Recco, Ganduccio) vogliono provenga dalla valle di Sturla e da Borgovalditaro; secondo altri, dal paese di Caregli presso Borzonasca; i continuatori del cronista Caffaro ne fanno invece capostipite un Diotisalvi, mandato dall'imperatore ambasciatore a Genova (1238). Il genealogista Ganduccio affermò che i membri di tal famiglia erano venuti in Genova nel 1106 e che essi furono notai, divisisi fra loro di fazione, parteggiando gli uni per i Fregoso, gli altri per gli Adorno. La famiglia, numerosissima, si diramò in molte branche, alcune uscite dalla Liguria. Da Robualdo (1153) vennero consecutivamente Giovanni, Opizzo, Giovanni e Martino (1390-1415), il quale quest'ultimo ebbe per figli Giovanni e Giacomo.
