Antico ed assai nobile casato del Regno di Napoli, che ha goduto nobiltà in Bari, Bitonto, Napoli, Taranto, Palermo e Trieste, il quale vuolsi giunto dalla Grecia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, infatti, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nella italianizzazione del soprannome "Kalòs" (= “bello”), ad indicare una persona di bell’aspetto. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, la famiglia passò nel Regno di Napoli nel secolo decimo secondo, con il generale di Bisanzio Johannes Ducas (Kalòs), il quale fu sconfitto in battaglia e fatto prigioniero nelle Puglie. Secondo altri autori, invece, la casata venne nel XIII secolo con un altro Johannes Kalò, chiamato “Nobilis Vir”, ambasciatore degli imperatori Comneni e Paleologi.
