La tradizione vuole che essa sia una delle famiglia calabresi invitate da Carlo II d'Angiò, nel secolo decimoquarto, a stabilirsi in Lucera per ripopolare la città, rimasta quasi deserta dopo la cacciata dei Saraceni. Stabilitasi quindi in Puglia, essa ha continuato nei secoli ad illustrarsi grazie all'elevatezza dei suoi rappresentanti. Celebre quel Cavaliere e governatore militare di Candia che, nel 1571, combatté a Lepanto. Un ramo da Lucera si portò a S. Nicandro Garganico e da esso discese Giulio Antonio Luigi Maria Calabrese, nato a Roma il 10 novembre 1896. Valoroso combattente, fu insignito di Croce al Merito e di una medaglia di bronzo; fu creato inoltre Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia e Cavaliere Ufficiale di S. Stefano d'Ungheria.
