Muy antiguo linaje de Cataluña. Eran los C. hombres de para tge, de origen immemorial. Su primer solar se cimentó en tierras de Figueres (Gerona), castillo de C., donde nació la rama que pasó a la villa de Roses, de partido judicial de Figueres, y las que se extendieron por Aragón, Valencia, Malloca, Murcia y Andalucía. La rama que se estableció en la villa de Roses edificó un castillo en sus cercanías, y de ella fue Poncio C., que cuando el rey don Jaime I de Aragón organizaba su ejército en Masamagrell, para sitiar a Valencia, se ofreció al monarca para vigilar las costas con una fragata de su propiedad. Aceptando por don Jaime el ofrecimiento, Poncio Carbonell salió de Roses, y, a bordo de su nave, hizo varios cruceros desde el Puig hasta la villa de Cullera, ahuyentando a los enemigos y apresando numerosas embarcaciones. Agradecido el citado rey, le heredó en el término de Játiva y en el de Murcia, a donde le acompañó su hijop Alonso C., que fue heredado en Orihuela. Todos estos detalles constaban en unas certificaciones auténticas que poseía don José C., primer teniente de voluntarios de Valencia. Difícil sería enumerar los caballeros y los hechos de esta familia que tanto ilustraron a su patria; pero no queremos dejar de recoger algunos interesantes datos de diversos varones y ramas de este linaje. ...
