Federico II fu incoronato a Palermo il 1296, non mancarono durante l'occupazione Aragonese le pretensioni della casa d'Angiò e le scomuniche del papa; anche un momento lo stesso Giacomo si mostrò disleale e nemico al fratello ed alla nazione, che l'aveva fedelmente servito.
