Famiglia trevigiana assai antica e nobile propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Si vuole che il capostipite sia un Cavasio, amico e consigliere di Rachide Re dei Longobardi, che nell'anno 750 edificò il castello a cui diede il proprio nome ed i suoi discendenti furono detti Cavasio, da Cavasio, Cavasi, de Cavasi etc. Prese, dunque, il nome dal castello omonimo di sua signoria. Gualperto da Cavasio, valoroso capitano dei Trevigiani, godette del titolo di Conte di Cavasio nel XII secolo. Nel 1198 la sua vedova Lodovica Capilupi e suo figlio Gualpertino comprarono il castello d'Onigo e mutarono il loro titolo da Conti di Cavasio a Conti d'Onigo. Questa famiglia è menzionata dallo storico F.
