La famiglia, pur non potendo vantare una nobiltà di origine feudale, fu fino da epoca abbastanza antica distinta per le alte cariche occupate alla corte dei duchi di Massa e Modena. Da Fivizzano Ceccopiri, n. il 2 agosto 1583, incaricato di affari presso la S. Sede e sempre distinto colla qualifica di "molto magnifico" nacque un Pietro che fu un uomo di Toga e Console di Balìa, il cui nome fu fatto rivivere in un figlio nato postumo il 25 ottobre 1650 che, divenuto avvocato fiscale e consultore del duca di Modena, fu ascritto al patriziato modenese da Rinaldo d'Este con decreto del 2 maggio 1730. Due figli ebbe questo secondo Pietro: Francesco e Cosimo, il primo dei quali, nato il 14 novembre 1692, risiedette fra i Consoli di Massa e fu Maggiordomo della duchessa Maria Teresa Cybo d'Este; il secondo vestì l'abito talare, divenne abate e gentiluomo del duca di Modena, e quindi consigliere della duchessa Reggente di Massa. Francesco ebbe quattro figli: Pietro, Alberigo, Lazzaro e Paolo Ambrogio. Il primo fu Ministro camerale del ducato di Massa e maggiordomo di Maria Beatrice Duchessa di Modena e Massa e Arciduchessa d'Austria; Alberigo fu comandante degli alabardieri e maggiordomo anche lui della detta Principessa; Paolo Ambrogio fu scolopio e rettore del collegio dei Nobili in Modena; infine Lazzaro fu incaricato di affari del duca di Modena alla Corte Pontificia. Pietro ebbe a sua volta un figlio, chiamato Cosimo, che divenne Ciambellano e Guardia nobile del Duca Francesco IV e podestà di Massa; suo figlio Pietro fu anch'egli Ciambellano e guardia nobile, e i suoi figli sono gli attuali rappresentanti di questa famiglia. Fino dal principio del XVII secolo, i membri di questa famiglia si trovano ovunque ricordati come Conti e Nobili di Massa; questi titoli ricorrono comunemente nelle lettere e nei documenti ufficali ad essi indirizzati dai sovrani e principi delle case ducali di Modena e Massa e arciducali di Austria.
