Le prime notizie sul casato si hanno già nel XIII secolo, con alcuni atti conservati nell'Archivio Urbano. La famiglia si è imparentata con altre nobili casate, come gli Albertini, dal 1507, i Capocci, dal 1520, i Frangipani, nel medesimo anno, con i Galliani, nel 1562, con gli Americi, i Muti e i Palatini nel 1563 e con i Valle, nel 1570. Nella Chiesa di San Gregorio son presenti due lapidi; la prima recita: "Camilli de Cithera Nobilis Romani Hic Ossa Requiescunt Vixit Annos XXXX. Mens VI, Dies XXX, Anno D.ni MDLXX"; l'altra dice: "Dilectissimae Conjugi Hyeronimae de Valle Nob. Rom. Quae Vixit Annos LIII. Mens IV, Dies IV. Camillus de Cithera Nob. Rom.
