I genealogisti lucchesi, Penitesi, Tucci e Baroni fanno originaria questa famiglia della Slesia, donde avrebbe seguito l'imperatore Ottone I nella sua discesa in Italia con Goffredo di Cenamo. Il primo documento d'archivio è una carta d'oblazione del 1135 di Cenamo di Pandolfo e di sua moglie Giulitta, offerenti alla cattedrale di S. Martino. Insigniti del titolo comitale palatino, nel 1195, da Filippo, duca di Toscana, figlio di Federico I imperatore, ottennero il 13 giugno dello stesso anno, il privilegio del toloneo dallo stesso duca, in Ranuccio e Gottifredo di Filippo. Furono in seguito magnati cittadini, perciò banditi all'avvento della fazione popolare dei Neri, nello Statuto del 1308, come appartenenti alla cerna potentium.
