Un Franco Ciardi, del capitano Medoro, medico di valore e buon letterato (1705-1776), da Sestola, sua patria, trasferì la famiglia, che era annoverata tra le primarie del Frignano, alla Mirandola. Il duca Francesco III d'Este, con suo chirografo 27 giugno 1761, accordavagli, come a tutta la sua discendenza maschile in infinito, la cittadinanza nobile di Mirandola. Distinti dottori di leggi e letterati furono Luigi (1743-1814), di Franco, e Carlo (1795-1860), autore quest'ultimo, fra l'altro di un Repertorio Generale della nobiltà mirandolese, che si conserva inedito presso l'Archivio Municipale della Mirandola.
