Esta gran familia es originaria de la República de Génova, entre cuyo antiguo patriciado figuró desde tiempos remotos, dando varios Príncipes a la Iglesia, como el Papa Inocencio VIII, cuyo hijo fué Francisco C., Conde de Firentilo, con larga descendencia, que ostentó numerosos títulos y preeminencias. De esta misma familia fué el Cardenal Aldebrando C., primer Ministro del Pontífice Inocencio XI. En las islas Canarias se estableció una línea de este ilustre linaje, como consta por la carta-certificación expedida en 1586 por el Dux y Senadores de la República a favor de Juan Antonio C. de Sopranis, calificado en ella de Ilustrísimo genovés. Tronco de la línea de Canarias, fué: Jácome Rafael C. de Sopranis, noble patricio inscrito en el "Libro de Oro" de la nobleza de Génova, que casó con doña Margarita della Scaglia, y fué su hijo Felipe C. de Sopranis, primero del nombre, poblador y Regidor perpetuo de Gran Canaria, que se estableció en la villa de Guía desde los primeros años del siglo XVI. Contrajo dobles nupcias las primeras, en Génova, con una señora cuyo nombre se desconoce, y las segundas, en Gran Canaria, con doña Clara Inglés del Castillo, fallecida en 1575 (hija de Juan Inglés del Castillo, primer mayorazgo de Telde, y de doña Isabel Gómez de Alcalá, su primera mujer, y nieta del noble caballero Conquistador Cristóbal García del Castillo, fundador del mayorazgo de Telde).
