Antiguo apellido catalán, extendido por el reino de Valencia y quizá derivado del de "Colom", puesto que hay testimonios que, como a éste, lo hacen originario de la Provenza y tiene armas muy parecidas a las de dicho linaje y a las de "Coloma", que también parece dimanado del de "Colom". Mosén Jaime Febrer confirma ese origen provenzal del apellido C., diciendo que Guillermo C., que vino de Caraldes (pequeña comarca de Francia, que perteneció al Condado de la Provenza), sirvió de soldado aventurero en Burriana y en la conquista de toda La Plana. Pasó después a Valencia, Silla y Sollana, y cerca de la villa de Picasent apresó dos grandes manadas de bueyes y mulos. Por último, fue heredado por el rey don Jaime I de Aragón en la villa de Onteniente. Por real despacho de 9 de enero de 1691 fue concedido el título de marqués de C. a don Francisco C. de Borja. En 1751 lo heredó otro Francisco C., y en 1790 doña Josefa C. En 1853 pasó a Joaquín Mergelina y Selva, y en 1905 lo heredó doña María Magdalena Mergelina y Marco, que casó en Valencia con N.
