On trouve le nom de cette maison diversement écrit Cortial ou Courtial. Noblesse chevaleresque. Guillaume, damoiseau, seigneur dudit lieu près Retournac, vivait en 1299. Arthaud damoiseau, son fils, rendit hommage de cette terre au seigneur de Roche-en-Régnier en 1336 et Guigon du Cortial de son fief, paroisse de Retournac en 1389. Antoine écuyer, épousa vers 1490 Jeanne de Beauzac fille de Guillerme seigneur du Fieu, de la Faye et de Aëlis du Crozet. Un capitaine châtelain de la baronnie de St-Pal-en-Chalencon (1505); un chanoine de la collégiale de St-Georges du Puy (1460). Convoquée en 1639, au ban et arrière-ban du Velay. Deux branches très bien alliées: l'une en cette province, maintenue (1669), s'est éteinte dans les Bayle de Martinas qui devinrent seigneurs du Cortial et dans les de Fay-Solignac qui devirent seigneurs de Villelonge; l'autre branche, passée en Auvergne, y a été maintenue le 9 avril 1669, sur titres filiatifs remontant à Pierre, lequel testa le 13 mars. 1511. ...
