Antica famiglia ed assai nobile del Friuli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Nell'anno 1005 Varnero d'Ausperg, col figlio Oderico, venuto in Italia dalla Carinzia, ottenuto l'assenso di Popone, patriarca di Aquileia, fondò il castello di Cuccagna, o Cucanea, sulle falde dei monti vicino a Faetis e da questo presero il nome i discendenti che ebbero la prerogativa di camerieri ereditari del patriarca di Aquileia, ossia del Ducato del Friuli e sotto il veneto dominio ebbero quella di regolatori del Parlamento friulano. Nel 1320 questa famiglia si trasferì a Udine, ove fu ascritta a quella cittadinanza. Da quattro nipoti del menzionato Olderico derivano quattro rami della famiglia che presero i nomi di Zucco, Freschi, di Partistagno e di Valvassone. Oltre il feudo di Cuccagna ebbero i villaggi di Bugnias, Bando, Silisca, Crauglio e Faetan e i castelli di Partistango, Sofermburgo, Castel Pagano ...
