Están conformes todos los genealogistas en que este apellido se escribe también Avalos, Dávalos o Dábalos, pero siendo siempre el mismo, a pesar de tales variantes. Es muy antiguo. Se afirma que tiene su origen en una familia goda del mismo nombre, que vino a España cuando los godos quitaron a los romanos el Imperio, la cual hizo asiento en la villa de San Félix Dávalos, en Navarra. Francisco Sansobino, famosísimo historiador genealógico, en su libro de las "Familias ilustres de Italia", folio 18, deice que los Dávalos son mucho más antiguos en España que los godos, y lo prueba con que en su tiempo se hallé en la ciudad de Calahorra una tabla de mármol, y en ella esta inscripción romana: "Sancio A. calagurritano, homini pro bono patriae communitulando invictisimo Senatus populusque calagurritanus fanum hic publicare celebravit, astante Marco Actilio Régulo, proconsule". El Licenciado Frías de Albornoz, escribe que los A. o Dávalos traen su origen de un Infante de Navarra, de quien también descienden los Señores de la casa de Tosantos. Argote de Molina y Bernabé Moreno de Vargas, corroborando esta opinión, manifiestan que del linaje de Tasantos viene el de Dávalos. Sin embargo, la verdadera descendencia de los A. o Dávalos, en opinión de eminentes tratadistas, procede de la villa de San Félix Dávalos, en Navarra, donde fueron naturales y heredados, siendo el primer Señor de este linaje Guillermo Avalón, descendiente de la Casa Real de Inglaterra. ...
