La famiglia sono di origine senese, divenne nota nel XVII secolo per merito del cav. Francesco, il quale fu distinto pittore del suo tempo. I di lui figli, sacerdote Antonio e cav. Giuseppe Nicola, si perfezionarono in Roma nell'arte paterna, nella quale lo superarono di gran lunga. Nelle chiese e nei palazzi di Siena restano numerosissime opere loro, eseguite fra la fine del `600 e la prima metà del `700; in alcune di esse pose mano anche un altro loro congiunto, Antonio. Anche un figlio di Giuseppe, di nome Apollonio fu buon pittore, sebbene inferiore al padre e allo zio. Nell'anno 1707 l'imper. Giuseppe I concesse la Nobiltà generica a Giuseppe Nicola, assegnandogli uno stemma in cui si ritrovano i richiami all'arte professata dal concessionario. La R.
