Cette illustre maison, connue depuis Hervé vivant en 1202 et qui combattit à Bouvines en 1214, a produit deux maréchaux de Bretagne, dont l'un commandait les Bretons à la bataille des Trente en 1350; un maréchal de France en 1595; des chevaliers du Saint-Esprit; deux évêques de Rennes et abbé de Beaulieu, mort en 1711, en qui, et avec le marquis de Lavardin, tué à la bataille de Spire en 1703, s'est éteinte cette famille. La branche ainée fondue dès la fin du XIV siècle dans la maison de Dinan qui transmit par alliance la baronnie de Beaumanoir aux Laral. Cette terre a appartenu depuis aux familles Peschart, Le Meneust et de Langle. Une autre illustre branche (de Liré) fondue en 1504 dans du Bellay puis du Breil et la Bourdonnaye a produit Philippe, amiral de France, décédé en 1543, et s'est alliée en 1645 à la maison de Rohan par le mariage d'Henri, seigneur de Sainte-Aulaye avec Marguerite, duchesse de Rohan, princesse de Lèon, comtesse de Porhoët, avec substitution expresse des nom et armes de Rohan aux enfants à naître de ce mariage, ce qui a été exécuté. Un lieutenant-général, chevalier des ordres en 1781 et un cardinal-archevêque d'Auch, puis de Besançon en 1828, décédé en 1833. ...
