Auch im Süden ist eine doppelte Bewegung zu dem Typus Fries hin sichtbar. a) Fries gewinnt appellative Bedeutung gleich hünenhafter Kämpfer, in einer pfälzischen Zusammensetzung "Cambyses was gar ein freidig fries" (d. h. ein trotzig–wilder Kämpfer), "Africanus..... ein kuener fries". Seit Anfang des 15. Jahrhundert ist oberdeutsch Fries gleich Grabenzieher, Dammaufwerfer, Wasserarbeiter. Zum anderen ein kleiner Rest geht auf die erweichte Form von Fritz wird zu Frieß zurück.
