La famiglia è originaria di Firenze, dove furono matricolati nelle arti della lana, della seta e dei medici e speziali e dove goderono i supremi onori; con Bartolomeo, che fece parte della signoria in qualità di Priore nell'anno 1426, si trasferirono per ragioni di mercatura a Barga e a Carrara, esercitandovi l'industria della lana. Con rescritto sovrano del 1 luglio 1836 il dott. Niccolò di Gio. Domenico, insieme con gli zii paterni dott. Ermenegildo e Avv. Angiolo, fu ascritto alla nobiltà fiorentina. Il predetto dott. Niccolò, che nel 1834 aveva ottenuto l'autorizzazione ad aggiungere il cognome dell'adottante Giuseppe Gamba, fu con rescritto del 15 febbraio 1838 decorato anche della nobiltà di Livorno dove dimorava e dove aveva contratto matrimonio con la nobile donna Ermellina Atena, di Domenico Castelli.
