Afirman muchos tratadistas que este noble linaje desciende del de Salas, cuyo solar estuvo en el Concejo de Salas, del partido judicial de Belmonte (Asturias). Pero hay en ese testimonio una notoria equivocación. El linaje de D. no procede de dicha casa de Salas, mal llamada así por añadidura, pues su verdadero nombre era casa de Valdés, de Salas; esto es, casa del linaje Valdés, radicada en el Concejo de Salas, porque lo fundó Gómez González de Valdés en dicha villa, con motivo de haber heredado en la partición de bienes de sus padres (que fueron D. Gonzalo Meléndez de Valdés y doña Andrea Suárez, Señores de toda la casa y familia de Valdés) los que poseían en el Concejo de Salas, llamándose desde entonces casa de Valdés, de Salas. La familia D., que se unió con la de Valdés, no sólo por el mencionado matrimonio, sino por otros recíprocos enlaces, es muy antigua, y trae su origen, según escribe José Manuel Trelles, del Conde D. Alorio Rodríguez, Señor del Valle de Doriga (cuyo nombre tomó el apellido), del ya citado Concejo de Salas y en el que radicó el solar de D. Dicho Conde D. Alorio vivió en el reinado de Don Ramiro. Garci Fernández de D., Señor de esta casa, fué uno de los que concurrieron a la Junta general que se celebró en Avilés el año de 1378 para oponerse al repartimiento que pretendía hacer Gonzalo Rodríguez de Argüelles a favor del Conde de Gijón D. Alfonso. Dejó por hijo y sucesor a Fernán García de D., Señor de esta casa. Otra casa muy antigua. La casa de D. procedió de Don Juan Fernandez de Salas, padre de Don Fernando Valdés, los cuales tenian su asiento y casa solar en Asturias, en el lugar de D., por lo cual sus descendientes tomaron este nombre por apellido. ...
