Da Farla, piccolo villaggio nei pressi di S. Daniele del Friuli, trae origine e nome questa famiglia, che inizia la sua genealogia da un Martino Farlatto, il di cui figlio Bernardino fino dal 1576 abitava in S. Daniele. Aggregata al Consiglio nobile di Gemona, con delibera 27 agosto 1696, venne riconosciuta nella nobiltà dal Governo italiano con DecretoMinisteriale 20 dicembre 1897. Fra i suoi membri degno di menzione è il padre Daniele Farlatti, nato a S. Daniele nel 1690 e morto nel 1733 che pubblicò in tre volumi una Storia dell'Illirico sacro, poderosa opera assai apprezzata dagli studiosi, per quanto non immune dai difetti del tempo in cui venne scritta.
