El apellido F., muy rancio y noble en Aragón, es patronímico de los nombres propios Fortun, Fortunio y Fortunyo, que se usaron mucho en la edad media en aquella región. También es patronímico de F., de lo que resulta que el patronímico conservó íntegra la misma voz del nombre. En Aragón hubo familias F. de muy varia procedencia; pero entre ellas se destaca, por su nobleza y lustre, la que tuvo su primitivo casal (del que dimanaron diversas ramas extendidas por el Alto Aragón), en el lugar de Abi, actualmente agregado al Ayuntamiento de Seira, partido judicial de Boltaña (Huesca) y sito en la orilla izquierda del río Esera, ya dentro de la comarca montañosa de la antigua Ribagorza, limitando con la comarca de Sobrarbe. Consta la hidalguía de sangre de estos F. en varios documentos, entre ellos, una escritura de infanzonía testificada por Pedro de Cuaete, en 7 de Diciembre de 1619, y un decreto puesto a continuación de la misma por el Obispo de Barbastro, don Alonso de Requesens y Fenollet, como Señor temporal de dicho lugar de Abi, fechado en 27 de Octubre de 1627, en el que, entre otras cosas, se manda que no se cobre maravedí ni demás pechas a los F., por haber acreditado ser legítimos infanzones. Hay otra escritura de reconocimiento de infanzonía testificada por Ignacio Latorre y Andreu, en el lugar de A., en 5 de Agosto de 1775, a favor de los F., y otra, testificada por el mismo Escribano Latorre, a favor de José F. ...
