Fra le più nobili ed illustri della città di Cherasco fu la suddetta famiglia, signora di Costa Ungaresca, poi di una parte del castello marchionale di Saluzzo e di altri signorili diritti. Nel 1228 un Don Giorgio-Ottavio de' Lunelli da Cherascoi era preposito di San Pietro di Manzano, antica patria della famiglia, un ramo della quale tuttora vi risiedeva. Apparteneva a questa famiglia il Beato Lanfranco, Domenicano, fondatore del convento del suo Ordine in Savigliano, fiorito in pieno secolo XIII. Ultimo di questo casato fu l'abate Don Lanfranco dei Lunelli nei signori di Cortemiglia, morto da pochi anni.
