Hay autores que afirman que esta casa trae su origen del mismo tronco de los Señores de Vizcaya; pero lo hasta ahora probado históricamente, es que desciende de la casa de Guevara, en la foma que vamos a explicar. Pedro Vélez, o Velas de Guevara, Señor de la poderosa casa de Guevara, casó dos veces: La primera, con una señora cuyo nombre ignoramos, y la segunda, con doña María de Salcedo. Este caballero poseyó también los Señoríos de Oñate y del Valle de Léniz, en Guipúzcoa. Del primer matrimonio nació Ladrón de Guevara, que heredó la casa de Guevara y continuó su sucesión. Del segundo enlace fué hijo Sancho Pérez de G., fundador de la casa de G.. El apellido G. se extendió por la provincia de Guipúzcoa, creando nuevas casas en Vergara, en la villa de Legorreta, del partido judicial de Tolosa, y en el poblado de Igueldo, cercano a la ciudad de San Sebastián. Igualmente se extendió por Vizcaya, sobre todo por el Duranguesado, creando solares en las anteiglesias de San Vicente de Abárcegui, Ceánuri, Dima, Apata-Monasterio, San Agustín de Echevarría, Urquiza de Arratia, Merindad de Uribe y villa de Ochandiano, todas del partido judicial de Durango, en Trucios y Loizaga, del partido judicial de Valmaseda, y en la villa de Bilbao. ...
