Lorenzo Franceco, gonfaloniere della Comunità di Fiesole per l'ammissione al patriziato di Firenze, che gli fu concessa con Decreto del 1 sett. 1837, questa famiglia deriverebbe da quella di Guccio del Massaio, che risiedette fra i priori nel 1367; e i De Massaio sarebbero alla loro volta una derivazione della casata dei Caponsacchi, nominata come antichissima anche dall'Alighieri. La diramazione della famiglia, avrebbe avuto origine da un Massaio detto della Gargiolli, i cui nipoti, nati dal figlio di lui Nardo, si trovano con quella denominazione ricordati in un istrumento di lodo del 1361. Sono da ricordare fra i membri di questa famiglia, Andrea, che liberato dall'esilio, cui era stato condannato, riportò per la Repubblica Fiorentina una vittoria navale sui genovesi nel 1407, fu comandante delle galee fiorentine pure nel 1412 e quindi governatore di Porto Venere; Giovanni, di Antonio Gargiolli, matematico ed architetto insigne ...
