El primer Señor y Barón de A., vástago de la noble e interesantísima familia que parece llenar durante varios siglos las historias de los pueblos que habitaron a uno y otro lado del Pirineo, dando Príncipes a los numerosos Estados que se formaron entre las luchas de godos, francos y árabes, fué Bergán García I, hijo segundo de García Arnaldo, Vizconde de Dax; nieto de Arnaldo López, Vizconde también de Dax; segundo nieto de Lope Aner, Vizconde de Olorón; tercer nieto de Aznar Sánchez; cuarto nieto de Sancho García, Duque de la Gascuña, y undécimo de Eudón, cuya colosal figura no ha podido obscurecerse en el caos de los revueltos tiempos en que vivió. Dicho Bergán García, primer Señor de A., recibió este Señorío en el año 1040 de manos de su padre, así como las Baronías de Bergouey y Garris, que fueron desmembradas, al efecto, del país de Miza, al que pertenecían.
