Ist aus der Heraldik (wie zB. bei den seit 1192 nachweisbaren, dem Uradel der mittelrheinisch Reichsritterschaft angehörigen Greiffenclau) ganz unwahrscheinlich, da der bürgerliche Name längst da ist, ehe es bürgerliche Wappen gab. - Zum anderen Herkunft aus einem Hausnamen nur vereinzelt. Und die Hauptmasse der Greif(f) gehört zu den Übername und bezeichnet den sein Hab und Gut aufmerkasam wahrenden und rastlos mehrenden Mann. Diese Entwicklung wird dadurch befördert, daß der Name des Vogels Greif früh an "greifen" angelehnt wird, wie denn auch in der Heraldik die ursprüngliche Löwentatzen des Fabelwesens zu mächtigen Krallen ausgestaltet werden. Und gelegentlich zu dem Ortsname Greif (Nord/Schlesien). - Vereinzelt bleibt zu beachten, daß mittelniederdeutsch greve mit Griffe wechseln kann.

Obwohl keine sicheren Angaben zur Datierung des geschichtlichen Ursprungs und zu seiner Zuordnung zu einem bestimmten Gebiet vorhanden sind, ist ein Nachweis des Adels über die Deutung des Wappens möglich.
