L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nome slavo "Joska", che, per tramite del suffisso "-ka", dal valore ipocoristico, consiste in un'abbreviazione dell'originale "Josip" (= Giuseppe).
