Debió tomar su nombre este linaje de la villa de Jorba, que hoy pertenece al partido judicial de Igualada, en la provincia de Barcelona. Pasaron después a esta ciudad, fundando casa en la calle de Santo Domingo, donde aún se ven sus armas. De esta familia hay memoria desde más de setecientos años, y sus caballeros fueron señores de la villa y castillo de J. La hija de un primogénito de este solar, llamada doña Geralda, casó con Ramón de Cardona y heredó dieciséis lugares. Su tío, Berenguer de J., fue señor de Orpinell. A la casa de la ciudad de Barcelona perteneció Andrés Mercer de J., doncel y natural de Barcelona, que casó con doña Aldonza de Pau, y fueron padres de Cecilia de J. y Pau, que contrajo matrimonio con Francisco Gort, doncel, y procrearon a Jerónimo Gort y J., Señor de Su, que en su esposa doña Petronila Gort y Jordá, tuvo a Bernardo Gort y Gort y J., doncel, bautizado en San Justo, de Barcelona, el 18 de Febrero de 1621. En 1644, ingresó en la Orden de San Juan. También pertenecieron a la misma Orden de San Juan, en el Gran Priorato de Cataluña: Guillermo J., Comendador de Cervera-Ametlla, desde 1241 a 1245; Gerardo J., Comendador de Villafranca, desde 1321 a 1323, que aún vivía en 1343, y Francisco J., Comendador de Termens, en 1377. doña Elisenda J., fué Señora del mismo hábito y cuarta fundadora.
