Ancient Sicilian family, of clear and ancestral virtue, originally known as La Verghetta, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. family, in all ages, always stands out, thanks to the prominent figures, which gave birth, in the public service, in the liberal and ecclesiastical professions and in the military service. Among these, without undervalue the omitted, we would like to mention: Tommaso, landowner, flourishing in Catania, in the late thirteenth century; Federico, militiaman, flourishing in 1490; Antonio Maria, landowner, flourishing in Catania, in 1523; D. Luigi, canon and apostolic commissioner in the Abruzzi, flourishing in 1545; Gio. Batta, who distinguished himself in the defense of Malta, against the Turks, in 1565; Tommmaso Maria, doctor in "utroque jure", flourishing in Catania, in 1579; Filippo, canon, theologian and apostolic commissioner, living in 1614; Pietro, landowner, flourishing in Naples, in 1642; Antonino, who served the King of Spain during the revolt of Masaniello, in 1647; Fr. Giacomo, of the Order of Preachers, flourishing in 1756; Giuseppe, who bravely took part in the campaign of 1860/61, for the defense of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; Mons. Andrea, Rector of Chieti Diocesan Seminary, at the dawn of the twentieth century. Family names so old, without any doubt honor not only families but also the cities that welcomed them; seems to be, in fact, very worthy the living members of this family which, with much decorum, carry this noble surname, which has had several illustrious members.
