Trae la propria origine da Bonifazio march. di Saluzzo. Anselmo figlio di Bonifacio, nominato dei Quaranta dal luogo di tal nome in valle di Stuva, ebbe il 13 Apr. 1153 da Odone Vescovo di Albenga la investitura di decime in moltissimi luoghi, fra' quali quello di Lingueglia, e nel 1162 Bonifacio dè Linguerri figlio di Anselmo ricevè dall'Imperatore Federico I l'investitura del contado della Lingueglia con piena giurisdizione. Per continuata successione la famiglia conservò ed aumentò que' feudi sino al declinare del XVIII secolo. Dai duchi di Savoja aveva avuto il feudo di Somma-Monferrato. Si divise in due rami, detto l'uno della valle di Lerone, e l'altro di Garlenda. Molti cavalieri fornì all'Ordine di Rodi; Anselmo fu nel 1367 priore della commenda di S. Giovanni di Prè; Filippo nel 1400 ebbe un priorato in Lombardia; Aleramo fu priore di Pisa nel 1550; Carlo, ammiraglio, ebbe nel secolo XVI la commenda ...
