Garcia Bermudes, o qual se recebeu com D. Urraca de Montenegro e teve Garcia de L. e Lopo de L., fazendo deste alguns autores seu neto. Garcia de L. foi senhor de L., couto situado no bispado de Tui, na Galiza, a uma légua de Salvaterra e a outra do rio Minho. O seu descendente, Afonso Gomes de L., senhor de L. e do Paço de Nogueira, fronteiro e alcaide-mor de Tui, passou a Portugal por não querer prestar obediência a D. Henrique, Rei de Castela. Serviu D. Fernando I de Portugal que no ano de 1369 o pôs por fronteiro-mor da raia da Galiza e Portugal e lhe fez mercê do préstamo do Romarigães, do senhorio de Geraz do L. e da alcaidaria-mor de Braga. Casou-se com D. Mécia Anes do Canto filha de João do Cantro ou de Kant, condestável de Inglaterra, como dizem alguns genealogistas, da qual deixou geração que seguiu o apelido de L.. Nota-se nos livros de armas antigos grande confusão, porquanto dão aos Liras, Leiras e Leis as mesmas armas. Dizem alguns autores que L. deriva de Leira, pelo que pode ser a forma Leis, corrupção do plural de Leiras, opinião que não é aceitável.
