Antica ed assai nobile famiglia baronale siciliana, con residenza in Mineo, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Le prime notizie relative alla casato rimandano al secolo decimo quinto, ossia quando fioriva uno Stefano, segretario del Regno di Sicilia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una modificazione dell'aggettivo, di matrice grecanica, "makrìs", che, in greco moderno, ha il significato di lungo, alto. In ogni modo, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare. Fra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, contasi: un Antonio, con privilegio dato a 23 settembre 1570 esecutoriato a 11 novembre 1571, ottenne il titolo di nobile col Don; un Francesco Mario fu giudice straticoziale di Messina nel 1618-19 e giudice delle Appellazioni ...
