La famiglia è originaria di Lombardia e più precisamente di Bellano, terra posta sul Lago di Como, donde venne in Liguria nel secolo XVI. L'Abate Emanuele, Gerini di Fivizzano nelle sue memorie storiche di Lunigiana ricorda che Bernardo, Commissario Generale di Sarzana fu dall'imperatore Ferdinando I decorato di nobilissimo diploma e di molte prerogative. Questo Diploma datato da Vienna il 23 giugno 1564 così dice fra l'altro "Vestra de Magno famiglia semper antiquissima et iam inde a multis saeculis nobilitatis titulis et fascibus insignita fuisse dicitur quam nos et talem agnovimus". Nel 1576 si trova ascritto all'albergo Promontorio "Georgius Magnus de Spedia". La famiglia aggiunse al proprio cognome Griffi per il matrimonio di Aurelio con Anna Socini Griffi, avvenuto il 7 dicembre 1622. I Griffi erano venuti da Pisa a Genova intorno al 1300, infatti nella Chiesa di S. Francesco di Castelletto (ora distrutta) esisteva il sepolcro di Antonio Griphus con la suddescritta arma del Grifone, sotto la data del 17 dicembre 1350. Così i sepolcri di Giovanni de Griffis de Pisis nel maggio 1414 e di Cosimo nel 1450. Lo storico Giustiniani fa menzione di Filippo Grifo di Sarzana, vivente nel 1500, celebre lettore di giurisprudenza a Roma e a Pisa. Nel 1528 furono ascritti alla nobiltà nell'Albergo Grillo: Bartolomeo, Agostino, Stefano, Giovanni Battista Marcantonio Griffo. La famiglia è iscritta nel libro d'Oro della Nob. Ital. e nel'El. Uff. Nob. Ital. coi titoli di marchese (mpr.), patrizio genovese (m.), nobile di Sarzana (mf.), nobile del S. R. I. (mf.), in persona di Giuseppe, di Angelo Agostino, di Giuseppe. ...
