La famiglia è oriunda di Valestra, villa del comune di Carpineti nelle montagne reggiane, nella quale sorge un alto, scosceso e boscoso monte, che si ritiene con fondamento sia il "mons Balista", nominato da Tito Livio, sul quale si svolsero importanti fatti d'arme nelle guerre dei Romani contro i Liguri. E in vicinanza di esso, o sulle pendici del "mons Letus" morì il console Quinto Petilio. Sull'origine della fortuna di questa famiglia e sul suo nome corre una leggenda, anche attualmente diffusa per tradizione in quelle montagne. Si narra che essa avesse altro nome, e che un antenato avesse la fortuna di trovare sul monte Valestra un tesoro. Chi disse "una mano d'oro"; e che, tenuto da lui in possesso d'un cospicuo tesoro che formò la base del patrimonio della famiglia, che acquistò poi lassù terreni e case. Da ciò il sopranome dato alla famiglia "Della mano d'oro " o "Mano d'oro", e di qui "Manodori" Tale leggenda, quantunque non abbia conferma in nessun dato veramente attendibile, richiama però l'attenzione per la strana coincidenza dell'essersi in quei luoghi rinvenuti talvolta oggetti o traccie di tombe, ecc., dell'epoca dei Liguri e dei Romani, sebbene in quesiti luoghi, che furono ripetutamente campi di battaglia e accampamenti e fortificazioni delle due armate e dei due popoli guerreggianti, non siano mai stati fatti scavi sistematici e con guida e metodo archeologico. Pareva vi avesse pensato il Brizio; ma non se ne fece poi nulla. Ai 3 fratelli Ottavio, Don Giacomo, sacerdote e Giuseppe Manodori da Valestra, fu concessa la nobiltà, col titolo di Patrizio di Reggio, con Diploma 11 marzo 1705, indiz. XIII dagli Anziani Senatori della città di Reggio; e fu dai tre fratelli prestato il giuramento di fedeltà il 4 aprile stesso anno. Un dott. Giuseppe, vivente nel 1784, fu valente medico, e studioso, e conservò scritti e dissertazioni inedite di suo suocero Pier Giuseppe Corradini di Casalgrande, che fu pure valente medico. Dalla moglie Corradini ebbe nove figli, fra cui due soli maschi: 1) Marco, nobile di Reggio, sposò una Cilloni, ed ebbe, oltre a due figlie, Maria, in Bertoldi, morta ...
