Famille d'haute bourgeoisie du Puy dit de Martel et aussi mentionné sous son noms latin de Martelli ou Martello. Hesmengardus Martello est cité le 10 décembre 1351, dans un foi et hommage de randon-Armand IX, vicomte de Polignac à l'évêque de Mende. Vénérable messire Antoine Martel religieux bénédictin, est présent le 28 novembre 1499, à un accord entre Imbert de Saussac et les consuls du Puy. Jacques Martel docteur en droit, lieutenant du prévôt du pays de Velay, est dit père de Claude, lieutenant du prévôt des maréchaux de Languedoc en la sénéchaussée du Puy (1584) et fut remplacé dans sa charge par Jean Gaspard Martel, seigneur du Chambon près Vorey, bailli de la Cour commune du Puy, son frère. Claude Martel seigneur de Combelles, docteur et avocat en la sénéchaussée (1625), bailli de la Cour commune (1628), mourut assassiné la même année de sept coups de poignard, par Jean-Gaspard Martel qui précède. Ce dernier eut la tête tranchée à Toulouse. Noble Gaspard petit-fils de Claude seigneur de Beaurepaire et d'Ampilhac près Vernassaux (fief qu'il vendit en 1670), prévôt de la sénéchaussée du Puy, capitaine général en 1647, épousa Anne Le More laquelle testa le 6 avril 1699. Ils avaient pour fils autre Gaspard et Antoine Martel seigneur de Beaurepaire, marié à Madeleine de Benoît, et convoqué en 1689 au ban et arrière-ban de la noblesse du Velay. On trouve aussi sous ce nom des chanoines de N.-D. du Puy (1644-1690). Éteinte au XVIIIème siècle dans les d'Authier de Sisgaud. ...
