Heraldrys of family: Marzana
Ancient and very noble Calabrian family, known as Marzana or Marzano, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has spread, over the centuries, in different regions of the World. The stories of the Kingdom of Naples tell about this family since the time of the Norman princes (1180), under the dominion of which Guglielmo was lord of Marzano, from which the family took its name. Many knights of this lineage fought with Godfrey of Bouillon for the conquest of the Holy Land and, in the book of Emperor Frederick II, the M. are counted among the powerful barons of the kingdom.... To be continued
In 1246 they rebelled against Frederick and, together with Sanseverino family and the Fasanella family, took part in the famous conspiracy of Capaccio against the person or the status of that emperor. Later, in 1244, always with the same allied families, they took up arms in favor of the Church and dared to come with their own forces, against the emperor himself, to battle under Canossa. Defeated, the few survivors had to go away from the kingdom and suffer the confiscation of their property. But after becoming allies of Charles of Anjou, in 1266, they were repatriated, and by the new king were reinstated in their status. Tommaso M., marshal of the kingdom, was created in 1313 by King Robert, Count of Squillace and grand admiral. Among the many estates owned by the family, we remember that of Sessa with ducal title, given by Queen Joan to Tommaso, who had also the title of Count of Alife and the office of Grand Chamberlain of the kingdom and the princedom of Rossano, received by inheritance of Covella Ruffo who was wife Giovanni-Antonio. Family names so old, without any doubt honor not only families but also the cities that welcomed them; seems to be, in fact, very worthy the living members of this family which, with much decorum, carry this noble surname, which has had several illustrious members.
