Este antiguo y noble linaje tuvo su antiguo solar en tierra de Lara y Pedro Lezcano afirma que el apellido Mata por derivación, pronunciación, variación y leniciones ha tenido varias derivaciones entre ellas Mate, ya que ostentan las mismas armas, pero todos estos apellidos se registran como una misma rama. El Archiduque Don Carlos de Austria creó Conde de la Torre de M., el 29 de Mayo de 1707, a Don José de M. y Copóns, título que fue confirmando el 7 de febrero de 1865 a Don Francisco de Paula de M. y Alós. Don Juan de la M. Linares Vázquez Dávila fue investido Conde del Carpio el 8 de diciembre de 1774.
